Keeping Your House “Guest Ready”

mmanhoff • Apr 29, 2013

What do your guests see when they come to visit? If you're like a lot of people, you spend the last few minutes before company arrives hiding messes! Organizing Made Fun blogger Becky had friends tell her that her house was always immaculate , and she found this hard to believe.

Wanting to give everyone a chance to have this “guest ready” appearance, she explained her process. Here are a couple of great notes from what she wrote:

Immaculate is Impossible

“Immaculate” really means “spotless,” and the fact is, if your family lives in your home, it's never going to be completely spotless! Floors get crumbs on them as soon as they're clean, kids leave fingerprints on windows and mirrors, and family members leave clothes on the floor. It happens, and it's okay to accept that!

The fact is, this process is all about maintenance, and you can't maintain what you don't have! Whether you clean it yourself or hire maid services , get your house as clean as you want it to be. Then you'll be able to put the focus on maintaining and you'll find it to be easier and less time consuming than you think!

Create a Weekly Schedule

For maintaining clean, your best bet is to make yourself a schedule. For one thing, it will keep you structured, and for another, it gives you a concrete idea of what really needs to be done.

First of all, plan to tidy every day—that means picking up and throwing away any trash left around and putting things back where they belong—this is something that unfortunately really must be done every day before it becomes overwhelming.

Once you've tidied, spread these tasks out over the week:

  • Vacuuming
  • Cleaning bathrooms (toilets, sinks, counters, etc.)
  • Cleaning the kitchen (including mopping!)
  • Dusting

When you focus on getting one particular task done every day, you can actually get it done fast and not feel like you're spending all your time cleaning. Do this every week, and your house will always be immaculate...mostly!
