How to Make a Stunning Do-It-Yourself Headboard

mmanhoff • May 17, 2014

When you’re redecorating your bedroom, it’s important that both the appearance and the mood be just right. You look through furniture, colors, accessories, and designs to find the perfect one.

The “perfect” one is not uncommonly one of the priciest, too, but it doesn’t have to be! There are some amazing, designer-level headboards you can make yourself for less than half the cost of one you might find in a store.

Window Shutters. Whether you’ve been remodeling and have a few leftover shutters or find them at a yard sale or thrift store, window shutters can become an amazing headboard with just a little bit of paint.

Paint the shutters to match your room—in more than one color if you want to add a bit of extra dimension—then hang them above your bed. You can hang them vertically or horizontally, so experiment a little until you find exactly what you like!

Bench Seat. Those cushions that go on a bench or porch swing can become a headboard with just a shelf and some string! Add a mantle-style shelf above your bed and hang a bench cushion from it with sturdy string or rope.

Suddenly, you have a bed-and-breakfast worthy headboard for much less than you would pay for a custom headboard.

Framed Fabric or Wallpaper. This is a great trick because it can be incredibly stunning and costs less than $50, and there are a variety of ways to do it!

The basic ideas is to take picture frames and fill them with fabric or pieces of wallpaper. There are three ways to break it up, and probably more!

  • One large frame almost as wide as your bed.
  • Two medium sized frames that, when hung side by side, fit the width of your bed.
  • Several small frames arranged in a rectangle a little shorter than the width of your bed.

You can use the same fabric or wallpaper for all of the frames or mix and match. In fact, one of the most affordable ways to do this project is to buy inexpensive frames at a thrift store or yard sale and a wallpaper sample book (you can find used ones online for $12-50) and frame the samples!

What will you try for your bedroom?
