Five Important Spots to Clean

mmanhoff • May 28, 2013

It seems like there are always places in our house that need our attention. Unfortunately, there are often places we forget to check, as well. Are there places in your house dirt likes to hide ?

Maid services can help because they know where to look for hiding dirt, but if you’re going to tackle it yourself, here are some places to look:

1. The front door is probably not something you clean very often, but when you think about it, most of the germs in your house walk through it! Stop the germs in their tracks first with a nice, thick doormat to keep dust and dirt from entering, and then always remember to clean the door knob when you’re doing your cleaning.

2. The corners love to hold onto dirt and especially cobwebs, which can be a nightmare for allergy and asthma sufferers. Bring your all-purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth and take out the dust, cobwebs, and any grime that may be hiding there.

3. Beds and furniture are notorious for holding onto dirt and germs because they’re porous. Frequent cleaning is the number one way to bust them: vacuum your furniture when you vacuum your carpets and clean your mattress once every few months. An easy way to clean your mattress is to sprinkle it with baking soda, allow it to sit, and then vacuum well.

4. Showerheads and faucets are often overlooked for cleaning, but the spray can be affected and germs can grow in trapped water there. There are two ways to clean a showerhead: one is to take steel wool or a wire brush to it, the other is to soak it in vinegar overnight and then rinse it clean.

5. Sponges have developed a reputation as notoriously dirty, but they’ve earned it! The sponge was found to be one of the dirtiest spots in the house. How can you keep your sponge while banishing germs? There are two ways to do that as well: run the sponge in the dishwasher with your normal load or wet it, wring it out, and microwave it for 3 minutes.

What are the places you tend to overlook? How have you found ways to clean them?
