Tips for Treating Carpet Stains

Whether it's a glass of wine at a party, a slosh of coffee on a rushed morning, or a mischievous child with a cup of juice, a carpet stain is always a spill away. While cleaning services provide carpet cleaning as part of your ordinary clean, you're going to want to be ready for that next stain when it happens.

There are a few steps you can take and a few tricks you can use to make sure that your next spill doesn't get the best of you!

Don't scrub the stain. It might be your first instinct to grab the first cloth you can find and scrub before the stain soaks in, but scrubbing can actually make it much worse.

Not only is it likely to spread the mess around, staining your carpet in a larger area, it also encourages the liquid further into the carpet, possibly staining the carpet pad.

Test for color fastness when you buy your carpet cleaner. Do a spot test on a hidden corner of your carpet as soon as you bring it home. When the spill happens, you'll already know that your cleaner is safe for your carpet. To be even safer, make your own stain fighter--a little club soda or vinegar and water mixture can do the trick!

Wet the cloth, not the carpet. It's tempting to spray the cleaner right on the stain hoping it will prevent further damage, but you're more likely to just end up with a very wet carpet. Instead, spray a clean cloth with the cleaner of your choice.

Dab from the outside in. Once your cloth has been sprayed with cleaner, start from the outside edge of the stain and dab around it, working your way towards the center in a spiral, occasionally moving to clean area of your cloth. This will both prevent the stain from spreading and minimize the impact of the spill on your carpet.

Soak up the excess liquid with a dry cloth. Once the stain has been cleaned and most of the damage has been prevented, use a dry cloth to soak up extra moisture to prevent mold or mildew from developing in your carpet.

When you know how to treat a stain properly, even your maid service might not be able to tell anything ever spilled!
