Keeping Your Workspace Clean

Whether you work in an office or at home, your workspace is important to both your ability to work and your happiness while you work. While cleaning your home office is undoubtedly part of your house cleaning, keeping it straight by changing the way you clean and work within it can make every day a little easier.

Take a look at these ways you can make your office an enjoyable place to work:

1. Keep only what you actually use. There might be things you think are staples to any office space--sticky notes, paper clips, thumbtacks--but as you look through the things on your desk, think about the things you use on a regular basis. If those thumbtacks have been sitting on your desk untouched for a few months, find another place to put them or get rid of them altogether.

2. Important things stay close at hand. Once you've gotten rid of the things you don't use, it's time to take a hard look at the things you do use. Figure out which things you use the most: is there a reference book you constantly need? A contact list? Your favorite stapler? These things should be kept on your desk or wherever you use them the most.

3. Group like items together. Just like any organization project, figure out which things make the most sense and store them together.

It can be tempting to just dump everything in a drawer or basket, but really consider the ways in which you use the things on your desk. Put items together that often get used together.

4. Decorate thoughtfully. Most people like to have a desk that reflects a bit of their personality, and that's a great thing. Having reminders of home or hobbies can help relieve stress and make your office a more enjoyable place to be. However, if you fill up your desk with too many items, you will find more clutter than personality. Find things you can hang up on the wall, or consolidate pictures into a digital picture frame or small standing album. If you have decorative items, put them on shelves away from your desk to keep that space clear.

5. Tidy up regularly. While once a day is best, especially if you do it right before you leave for the day, tidy up at least once a week. Clear off trash, file paperwork, and if items have been moved, put them back where they belong. It's much easier to work in an environment that is tailored to how you do your tasks.
