Candle Safety for Your Home

Written by

Candles are a big part of many holiday traditions and a popular decoration this time of year. Flickering candlelight casts a beautiful glow over a home decorated for the holidays, but pose a hazard, as well.

According to the Consumer Safety Product Commission (CSPC), candle-related fires caused $347 million dollars in property damage between 2008 and 2010.

One of the primary tips for candle safety is to keep candles away from things that will catch fire. This means clutter must be at a minimum if you want to burn candles. Taking the time to eliminate clutter while you’re housekeeping can make your home safer for holiday lights. Read on for more safety tips.

Candle Safety Tips

In addition to eliminating clutter, there are a few more steps you can take to ensure your candles are safe this season:

  • Put your candles well out of reach of little hands. Children are naturally curious, and fire can be fascinating. Keeping their interest at a distance will keep them from getting burned and your candle from getting knocked over.
  • Keep an eye on your candles. Only light candles in rooms where you will be spending time or where you can easily keep an eye on them. If you are leaving the room for an extended period of time, go ahead and put it out.
  • Place candles on stable, heat-resistant surfaces. Also, look for candleholders that fit your candles. There are so many options available now that you can easily find a safe surface for your candles that adds a bit of flair or elegance to your décor, as well.
  • Always make sure the wick is completely out before leaving. When you blow your candles out to leave the house or go to bed, take an extra moment to make sure it’s no longer glowing or warm to the touch.

Candles are a lovely addition to your holiday decorations, but take the proper steps to be safe. Start with a good house cleaning, and then follow these steps to ensure your holiday is both beautiful and safe.
